  6. Conclusion

Sony is finally delivering a powerful update of the PS5 controller DualSense, which is aimed primarily at the ambitious gamers among you, because the DualSense Edge Wireless offers a wide range of customization options and a range of features that you know from pad manufacturers such as Scuf or AimControllers – among other things, the possibility to use rear buttons.

Controllers of this type are not exactly cheap. The providers mentioned above all charge more than 200 euros for these professional pads and Sony is also calling out a price of 240 euros for the DualSense Edge for PS5.

But you also get a lot on offer, starting with the scope of delivery. It comes with a bag in which you can transport the pad and other accessories everywhere. Also included are a two-meter+ USB-C cable, a locking adapter for the cable, two pairs of stick caps (high and low), and two pairs of back buttons (short and long).

With the locking box, you can fix the high-quality cable better to the USB-C port of the pad.

A little heavier

The dimensions correspond to those of the normal PS5 controller, the Edge controller is a little heavier at 335 grams. We measured 281 grams for the regular gamepad. We find neither one nor the other model really difficult.

In the first few minutes, it is noticeable that the back texture is a bit coarser and gives the feeling of more grip even with sweaty hands.

Convincing system integration

If we connect the controller, it will be recognized immediately by the PS5. The console offers a tutorial and creates a first alternative controller profile with us.

We quickly attach the longer rear buttons and place a few buttons on the new levers. We also change the stick sensitivity and the trigger dead zones. By remapping buttons and adjusting resistances, it becomes clear that we can configure this gamepad very much according to our preferences.

We also like the included stick caps, which are completely rounded and offer a rougher surface. We find that the thumbs rest better on the sticks, even with intensive stick use. The control is just better.

Once we have completed a configuration, we assign it a hotkey consisting of the Fn key and a standard key: for example Fn + Circle. If this hotkey is also pressed during a gaming session, all controller profiles will be displayed below. Now it is possible to quickly change a profile, but also to quickly navigate to the controller settings if the desire for major adjustments arises.

Switching profiles mid-game and being able to remap on the fly really makes this controller stand out. Sony has succeeded in interacting with the PS5.

A better player with the DualSense Edge?

With the DualSense Edge, Sony is targeting more pro gamers. You should still understand the game and practice playing it, but this gamepad can bring about noticeable improvements.

Thanks to the backward switch to shorten the trigger paths, you can shoot faster in first-person shooters like Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 because the path to the trigger point is shorter – very practical.

Actions such as crouching or jumping can still be assigned to the back buttons. As a result, the right thumb always remains on the analog stick, there is no need to switch to the buttons. Thus, the player wins seconds that decide about life and death in the game.

However, the use of these rear buttons also helps with other games. In some action titles, you can target enemies, sometimes with the not-always-natural click of an analog stick button (such as R3). If the command is on the back button, it is much easier to operate.

With Elden Ring, for example, changing items using the back buttons should also be easier – for example if you want to switch between weapons, wands or the like.

Thanks to the features of the DualSense Edge controller, you can definitely get stronger depending on the game. And even if you don’t have such high ambitions, some gameplay will at least become more enjoyable and that can increase the fun of the game. You don’t have to be a pro gamer to enjoy the controller more.

Unfortunately the battery is a bit weak

The battery life of the pad is said to be slightly lower than that of the normal PS5 controller. This is around 5 to 12 hours there. With the DualSense Edge, you can expect a runtime of 4 to 9 hours.

A picture like the one above on Twitter also shows why the battery life is lower. The battery of the DualSense Edge is simply smaller than that of the normal PS5 pad. That’s a shame, especially considering the price.

high price

If we look at this one, there are 240 euros for a controller. However, it is important to remember that pads with similar functions such as the Scuf Reflex Pro or pads from AimControllers also cost well over 200 euros.

If you were to buy the normal controller for around 65 euros and accessories individually from different manufacturers (rear adapters, caps, etc.), costs of around 130 euros would be incurred. The DualSense Edge still costs 110 euros more, but you get a complete package from the console manufacturer, everything is seamless and you don’t have to worry if third-party products might not work as well as expected. In addition, you probably only get this level of system integration from Sony.

Of course, we’re still checking whether the controller will hold out for a longer period of time and whether it can still be played well with it for a long time. Some customers have already complained about drift problems with the normal PS5 DualSense. After all, the analog sticks can be exchanged on this model. We will add more impressions to the test at a later date.

Conclusion

We think the DualSense Edge controller is possibly the best PlayStation controller Sony has made to date. The customization options for different player requests, the great system integration speak for themselves. The battery life is a bit short and the price is steep, but if you play a lot and value a good controller, you can consider buying it.
