Sonic, The Movie: the blue hedgehog puts up resistance

In 2020 was released in cinemas Sonic the Moviea feature film mixing animated images and live shots. Success was far from guaranteed, the blue hedgehog no longer being as popular as before and its design having triggered a wave of anger among the fans. The reception of the first trailer was such that the animation studio was forced to rethink Sonic’s entire appearance to bring him closer to his usual rendering. A saving choice, which allowed the film to attract numerous spectators in theaters and generate nearly $361 million at the box office.

The presence of Jim Carrey in the cast obviously helped, but overall the adaptation offered a nice and well-paced adventure, demonstrating the progression in the quality of video game adaptations. Jeff Fowler and his teams immediately set the table again, so that in 2022, the release Sonic 2, The Movie. This time it is a question of expanding the universe, the feature film introducing Knuckles the Echidna and Tails. The public is once again there, with a global box office that has passed the bar 401 million dollars, and caused more than two million entries in France alone. Expected in France forth December 18, 2024, Sonic 3, The Movie will have the difficult task of continuing this trend.

In the meantime, Paramount is making some room for Knuckles, and it’s working!

We will once again find Jeff Fowler to direct, but the casting takes a new step. Jim Carrey will make his comeback as Robotnik alongside by Idris Elba as Knuckles. But we will also have to count on Keanu Reeves, who was cast as the mysterious Shadow. In the synopsis, we learn that Robotnik has discovered old files dating from his grandfather’s time, within which he discovers a form of life “capable of destroying the world“.

To help fans wait, Paramount has developed a television mini-series, the objective of which is to make the link between Sonic 2 and 3. Entirely dedicated to Knuckles (Idriss Elba, therefore), this series, available for a few days on Paramount+, tells how the echidna and its devastating fists adapt to life on Earth. To help himself, he hires an apprentice who is none other than Deputy Sheriff Wade Whipple. Together, they prepare a bowling competition where her “ex-father” will be present.

Unfortunately, a Robotnik agent is on the duo’s trail in order to capture Knuckles and seize his power. Without breaking the ground, the series is qualitatively at the level of the two films, which is a good thing in view of the release of the third film. The series has in fact with a score of 67% from critics, which is higher than the first film (64%), and very slightly lower than the second, which received a score of 69%. However, things are more mixed on the public side, since the series displays a score of 74%, where the films obtained a score of 93 and 96% respectively.
