PS5 DualSense vs. DualSense Edge: This is how the controllers differ

CONSOLE

Sony wants to offer users more freedom and a better gaming experience with the DualSense Edge. But what can the new controller for the PlayStation 5 do?

Sony has released a new controller for the PlayStation 5, dubbed the DualSense Edge. This is an improved version of the standard model that has more buttons and functions. We compared the two devices and tell you what the new version can do.

The most important things about the controller are probably the different knobs and buttons and the different ways to configure them. While the PlayStation 5’s regular controller gives you a few options to tweak the buttons for you personally, the new DualSense Edge offers more buttons than its predecessor and more options to customize them at the same time.

The DualSense Edge controller has all the buttons of the standard model. In addition, there are two new buttons on the back, which are very reminiscent of the back buttons on Scuf gamepads. These are included in the scope of delivery in pairs in long and short versions and can be exchanged.

Directly below the back buttons you will find a switch that allows you to open the DualSense Edge. Another innovation are the two controls next to the triggers. These are used to set the resistance of the triggers, which can be quite useful in many games. There are also two new buttons just below the analog sticks. These are function keys that allow switching between controller profiles.

Customizable controls

A big advantage of the new controller is that more buttons can now be customized. Of course, this was previously possible with some games with the old model, but now the button assignment in the PlayStation menu can be changed in a more versatile way.

In order not to constantly have to make new settings, you can also set up profiles for different users or games. This allows the controls to be changed at the touch of a button and you can easily go from a shooter to a strategy game, for example.

Interchangeable sticks

Sony has also started making parts of the controller interchangeable. This means that the sticks can at least be replaced if they break. Until now, you had to buy a completely new controller for better or worse.

In addition to the advantage of a repair, this function can also be used to personalize the DualSense Edge. For example, the type of sticks can be changed and there will probably be different designs and colors in the future to create an individual look.

Prices

For the conventional controller of the PlayStation 5, you currently pay 64.99 euros, depending on the provider. The new DualSense Edge, on the other hand, costs 239.99 euros when it is released on January 26th, which is a decent step up. You can currently order this either directly from Sony or from various other retailers. Extensive testing will probably show if the price is justified, but for PlayStation gamers who have been craving more customization options, it’s definitely worth considering.
