PS5 follows Xbox: Update brings long-awaited graphics feature

Sony is rolling out an update this week that will give the PlayStation 5 a long-awaited graphics feature. PS5 owners finally get a feature that Xbox users have been able to use for some time.

PS5 owners can look forward to a handsome graphics upgrade later this week. Sony finally gives the new PlayStation the VRR feature and thus ensures improved performance. While the feature will be available for all games, some top games will also get an extra upgrade.

PS5: VRR update announced

VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) is a feature with which the connected screen or television no longer outputs individual images at constant intervals, but immediately when the GPU delivers a new image. This provides a more fluid perceived image. The jerking effect of inconsistent frame times is reduced, tearing is prevented and the average input lag (time between the keystroke and the effect being displayed on the screen) is reduced.

The feature has been available on PCs for almost 10 years under the name G-Sync (specifically for Nvidia graphics cards) or FreeSync (AMD and newer Nvidia cards). The Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles have also had the feature for some time.

The bottom line is: A better picture that is subjectively perceived as being much more fluid, especially for titles that don’t run smoothly throughout, most recently Elden Ring or Deathloop.

There is a catch: In order to be able to use VRR, you must have a monitor or television that supports the feature via HDMI 2.1. VRR cannot initially be used on devices with HDMI 2.0. LG’s popular OLED TVs have been offering VRR on the B, C and G series devices since model year 2020 and should be compatible. The same applies to many, but not all, Sony, Samsung and other top TVs from the last 1 to 2 years, as long as they have HDMI 2.1 ports – if in doubt, you can find out from the specifications of your TV model whether the TV VRR supports.

Sony has announced the upcoming update on its website – it should be rolled out this week. However, it was not specified when exactly it will come. (Source: PlayStation)
