Things are finally starting to get back on track for the playstation5. Indeed, the Sony console could come out of its shortage period in just a few weeks.

In addition, the Japanese manufacturer seems about to stop production of current models.

The PS5 will be everywhere (at least we hope so)

We are not going to redo the eternal series of shortages affecting the PlayStation 5. Despite this unfavorable economic situation, the Japanese manufacturer announced last June that it had shipped 21.7 million machines since the launch. A most correct result despite an extremely tense situation on the components market. Anyway, Sony intends to move up a gear next year.

According to the website Insider Gaming (managed by famous leaker Tom Henderson), the PS5 will ship 30 million units worldwide in fiscal year 2023. The latter runs from April 2023 to the end of March 2024. For comparison, Sony wanted to sell 18 million consoles in fiscal 2022, compared to 30.5 million for the next one. This 70% increase therefore seems to indicate the probable end of the shortage.

More than one version available?

Remember in passing that Sony plans to launch a new PS5 in September 2023. This version, which will have a removable disk drive, could go into production from next April. Insider Gaming goes even further by stating that this iteration will be, in the near future, the only one sold by the manufacturer.

Thus, the current PS5 (the one with integrated Blu-ray player and the 100% digital) could see their production be stopped at the end of 2023. After this milestone, Sony will only market its so-called “digital” console compatible with the removable disk drive. This would be sold for $100, and the “alone” PlayStation 5 for $399. A pack combining the two products would also be offered for sale for 499 dollars.

So despite this change in strategy, the business proposition will remain unchanged for consumers.
