PS5 UPDATE: Dolby Atmos for 3D audio, up to 8TB SSD, improved social features and accessibility with new beta firmware

It’s been a while since the PS5 got a major sound update. firmware, contenting itself with patches optimizing its performance. The last was indeed the 7.0 released in March, which had been preceded in February by a beta test phase with players. Well, here we are again in the same situation, since Sony Interactive Entertainment just revealed thata version of the system software will be deployed during the day in beta. Between 3D audio which will be Dolby Atmos compatible, M.2 SSD support up to 8 TBsocial features for Partyothers related to accessibility (probably in anticipation of the launch of the controller Access) and a few other new features, players of all stripes should find what they’re looking for.

With each release of a new version of PS5 system software, we add new features designed to improve the way you access your favorite content, navigate your console’s menus, or create new gaming memories with your friends. Today we’re excited to beta roll out a new version of PS5 system software that includes additional accessibility features, but also audio options to enjoy Tempest 3D AudioTech sound technology on Dolby-enabled HDMI devices. Atmos (such as soundbars, TVs or home theaters). This beta also offers other options giving you quick access to games or tips for your console, new ways to interact with other players and customize your multiplayer sessions, not to mention SSD support. Larger capacity M.2 (up to 8TB).

Although the beta is restricted to invited participants from select countries*, we plan to roll out this update globally later this year. If you are one of the players selected to test the beta version, you will receive an invitation by e-mail during the day, when the update is available for download. Some features offered during the beta phase may not make it into the final version or are subject to change.

Without further ado, here is an overview of the features of this beta version:

New accessibility features

  • Use of a second controller as assistance. Now you can assign a second controller to an account to use as an assist controller. You can then use these two controllers to control your PS5 console as if you were using a single controller. This feature gives you a new way to enjoy games with your friends or to help a friend or child through a tough section in a game.
  • To use an assist controller, go to [Paramètres] > [Accessibilité] > [Manettes] > [Utiliser une seconde manette comme assistance]then enable the option [Utiliser une manette d’assistance].
  • You can use an assist controller when your primary controller is a DualSense or DualSense Edge wireless controller, or a third-party PS5 compatible controller**.

  • Haptic feedback from system interface. You can enable haptic feedback effects while you navigate your PS5 menus using your DualSense, DualSense Edge, or PS VR2 Sense controller.
    • When enabled, system sound effects for certain events are physically transcribed through haptic feedback, such as focusing, reaching the end of a scrollable section, or ticking a box , or when you receive a notification or launch a game. This optional feature enhances immersion and is particularly useful for visually or hearing impaired players who appreciate additional feedback confirming their input.
    • To enable this feature, go to [Paramètres] > [Accessibilité] > [Manettes]then enable the option [Retour haptique lors de la navigation dans la console].

Support for Dolby Atmos compatible audio devices

  • 3D audio through Tempest 3D AudioTech sound technology is now compatible with all Dolby Atmos-enabled HDMI devices (such as soundbars, TVs, or home theaters). Tempest 3D AudioTech renders matched to the Dolby Atmos speaker setup used, including the top channels, to deliver deeper immersion in PS5 game soundscapes. ***
    • To enable Dolby Atmos, go to [Paramètres] > [Son] > [Sortie audio] > [Format audio (Priorité)]then select [Dolby Atmos].

Social feature enhancements

  • Party UI update. You can now invite a player to join a Closed Party without having to automatically add that player to the party or create a new party. Additionally, players can now send invitations for Open or Closed Parties to groups and not just to individual players.

  • Overview of Screen Sharing. If a player is sharing their screen in a Party you can join, you’ll see a preview of their Screen Share before they even join the Party.

  • Simplified access to your friends’ game sessions. You can see among your friends those who carry out an activity in which you can participate through the tab [Amis].
    • The Joinable icon appears next to friends playing a game that you can join.
    • You can join a friend’s game by pressing the options key, then selecting [Rejoindre le jeu]or by selecting the “Join” button on their profile card.

  • Game center tournaments tile. In the game center, you can see how many tournaments you are participating in and your best ranking, as well as the start date and time of the next tournament. You can select the tile to view the full list of tournaments.

  • Ability to react to messages with emojis. You can add reactions to messages using emojis, which make it easier to communicate with your friends.

  • Search for games in your library. You can now search for games in your game library.

  • Game Aid improvements. Game Aid cards have been improved****.
    • Along with ongoing activities, you can now see currently available activities, those that were previously available, as well as upcoming and completed ones.
    • If you select a map, its details are displayed on the right side of the map, making it easier to find its objectives and corresponding clues.

  • Mute PS5 beeps. You can mute or adjust the volume of the PS5 beeps when you turn it on, turn it off, or put it into rest mode.
    • Go to [Paramètres] > [Système] > [Bips].
    • To adjust the beep volume, select [Volume].
    • To mute the beeps, enable the option [Mettre en sourdine les bips].

Support for larger capacity M.2 SSDs

  • You can now use an M.2 SSD up to 8TB (previously the limit was 4TB) to expand the storage space of your PS5 console.
    • Important: M.2 SSDs must meet the criteria listed on this page. Carefully read the page linked above before purchasing an M.2 SSD for use in a PS5.

** You cannot use a DualSense Edge wireless controller as an assist controller. Some of the features of the DualSense controller, such as motion sensor, haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, will be automatically disabled if the controller is used as an assist controller.

*** Media app providers can update their apps on PS5 to support Dolby Atmos. In this way, users will be able to enjoy 3D audio in movies, series and more (The features of these applications are currently not supported by the PS5 system software beta).

**** You need a PlayStation Plus subscription to use Game Support.
