PS5 UPDATE: new features with firmware 22.01-05.00.00, the addition of Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) announced

Last month, PS5 players participating in the beta program were able to experience a new system software release for their console, packed with new features. Partythe GameBase, interface and accessibility. Some also concerned the PS4. Well, without warning, EIS announced on the PlayStation-Blog the arrival for all of these novelties and many others this Wednesday. You don’t even have to wait because the firmware 22.01-05.00.00 is already available !

Here’s basically what to expect:

New features on PS5 and PS4

With the support of our beta participants, we’ll be able to bring fan-requested features to our global community today, like the ability to create or join open or closed Parties on PS5 and PS4 consoles. On PS5, we’re also making interface improvements to Game Base and Trophy Maps, as well as accessibility features like mono audio for headphones.

For a refresher on PS5 features like game presets on your console, pinning videos and apps to the screen while in-game, or screen sharing with your friends, check out the new “Pro Tips” cards from the Control Center.

PlayStation 5 PS5 Update 23 03 2022

You can find the text version of the changelog and our screenshots of it on the following pages. Note also that the DualSense has also been updated, you just need to plug it into your console to install its latest firmware.

And so, in addition to this already extensive program, Sony Interactive Entertainment immediately announced that the VRRor Refresh rate, will soon be added natively (games like Ghostwire: Tokyo already offer this type of option on the console), enough to satisfy owners of a compatible screen.

On the horizon: Variable Refresh Rate support on PS5

We are also delighted that Variable Refresh Rate support is expected on PS5 in the coming months. On HDMI 2.1 compatible monitors and TVs, this option dynamically synchronizes the refresh rate of the display to the video output of the PS5 console. The visual performance of PS5 games will therefore be increased by reducing or eliminating visual artifacts like frame rate issues or screen tearing. Many PS5 games will feel smoother, with instant scene rendering, crisper graphics, and reduced input latency. Previously released PS5 games will be able to be fully optimized for Variable Refresh Rate via a patch. Future games should feature Variable Refresh Rate support upon release.

What’s more, you can also choose to apply Variable Refresh Rate to PS5 games that do not support it. This feature may improve the video quality of some games. If you experience any display issues, you can disable this option at any time. Both Variable Refresh Rate and this secondary option can be enabled or disabled.

Note: Results may vary depending on your TV and the game you are playing. We’ll let you know more details closer to the launch of this feature, including the names of some of the games that will support Variable Refresh Rate through a patch.

Our teams continue to work hard to improve your gaming and social experiences on PlayStation. Stay tuned so you don’t miss a thing!
