Mentioned several times, the famous update 7.0 of the firmware of the PS5 is finally rolling out.

This brings many major features, such as full Discord integration, as well as support for variable refresh rate (VRR) for 1440p screens, among other goodies. The update will launch automatically when the console is started, unless otherwise configured.

Update 7.0 sows variable discord

Particularly awaited since the partnership signed between the platform and Sony in 2021, full support for Discord (already present since last September on Xbox consoles) is finally coming to PS5. It is thus possible to join servers and chat with other players, all platforms combined.

To do this, you will need to link your Discord and PlayStation Network accounts from the console or the application. To interact with other users, the use of the mobile or PC application is however mandatory.

The other major aspect of this 7.0 update is the integration of VRR support on 1440p screens. It is of course necessary that these are compatible with the functionality (as well as the games used) and that they have an HDMI 2.1 port. To check this, just go to the settings, then to Screen and Video, then Video Output and then to Test Output 1440p.

A big update transferring quality of life

Along with the arrival of these two major features, PS5 firmware version 7.0 comes with several other welcome additions. A large part of these are interested in the transfer of data and backups between PS4 and PS5 or between two new generation consoles from Sony.

When installing a PS4 game, the system will thus split a notification to indicate that a backup is available on the PlayStation Network cloud. Same observation for a PS5 version of a game originally released on PS4. To take advantage of this feature, however, you must have a subscription to the PlayStation Plus service. Transferring data from one PS5 to another will also be made easier by this update, using Wi-Fi or an Ethernet cable.

The screen reader also gains in visibility, with more detailed indications when navigating the console menus or on the Internet. The DualSense controller is finally entitled to some attention, since it will now be possible to update its software, even in wireless mode.
