PS5’s new Pro controller has a secret trick to combat drifting

Sony will soon market a new controller for its PS5. Called DualSense Edge, it will offer advanced features to the most demanding players. Including technology to combat drift.

Sony did not make the trip to Cologne to present new products at gamescom, which is being held from August 24 to 28, 2022. However, the Japanese firm still passed a small head during the ceremony opening, during which the DualSense Edge controller for the PS5 was announced. More advanced than the classic DualSense, it is intended for a more demanding audience.

To offer a more advanced controller, Sony has taken over several features already seen elsewhere, in particular on Microsoft’s Elite controller. Thus, the DualSense Edge will offer various means of customizing the controller, whether on the hardware part (travel of the triggers, shape of the sticks) or through software (we can create several profiles). To stand out, it will still offer a new argument: the opportunity to completely change the module of the sticks.

Will the luxury DualSense be more durable?

Play longer thanks to the possibility of individually changing each module of the sticks “: this is the promise of Sony, in a press release published on its blog on August 23. This specificity may seem unnecessary. She is actually interested in the durability of an accessory that should be very expensive. Players are aware that the controllers are affected by the phenomenon of drift, especially observed on the Joy-Con of the Switch. This issue, which affects reliability, can trigger unwanted actions when playing. In some cases, you can’t play at all.

By allowing future owners of a DualSense Edge to completely replace the stick module, Sony is tackling the problem at the root. Your stick no longer works properly? There will be no need to go through the repair box, or even to buy a controller. Attention, the modules will be sold separately, at an unknown price for the moment. We therefore hope that Sony will not be too greedy, while the firm has just increased the price of the PS5. It is also hoped that the replacement of a module will be based on simple manipulations.

Beyond drifting, this new feature is designed to fight against the – normal – wear of the sticks, the most exposed components of a controller (Nintendo has squarely drawn a parallel with the tires of a car because of friction constants). With these replacement modules, Sony wants PS5 owners to invest in a DualSense Edge for a very long time. A way to prepare at an exorbitant price?
