The dispute over the expansion of the rapid transit system in Vienna-Hietzing is now entering the next round. Three citizens’ initiatives mobilize.
The modernization of the new connecting railway between Hütteldorf and Meidling continues to cause excitement. As early as March, the Ministry of Climate Protection issued a positive decision for the ÖBB project in the environmental compatibility procedure. Three Hietzinger citizens’ initiatives and the environmental organization “Alliance for Nature” have now lodged a complaint with the Federal Administrative Court against the EIA decision. Above all, the felling of a total of 925 trees and two and a half hectares of new sealing for the expansion of the high-speed railway line are a thorn in the side of the citizens’ initiatives. At the same time, an ideas competition for the design of the railway facilities was started, in which suggestions can be submitted. The main construction work for the project should start by 2024 at the latest, so that the S80 rapid transit line will be available every quarter of an hour from 2028.
