Suddenly shots rang out on the golf course. A sad incident occurred on Saturday at the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Resort on the coast of Río Grande in Puerto Rico. According to the police, there was a dog on the golf course. Near hole 17, the four-legged friend grabbed the golf ball from businessman Salil Zaveri (60) to play with.
As the newspaper «El Nuevo Día» reports, Zaveri drew a 9-millimeter pistol and pulled the trigger – in front of several horrified golfers. The businessman shot the dog at least twice, fatally injuring it.
He played calmly on
According to the prosecutor in charge of the case, Gabriel Redondo Miranda, Zaveri got into his cart and continued playing as if nothing had happened. “Since yesterday I’ve interviewed seven people and I have even more to ask because it was a Saturday when there are usually a lot of people on the golf course,” said Miranda on Sunday.
At hole 18 the handcuffs finally clicked for Zaveri. A shocked eyewitness had called the police, who were quickly on site. Commander Antonio López Figueroa strongly condemns Zaveri’s act and praises his officers: «Thanks to my police officers, who today were the voice of justice for a little dog that was killed in a hideous manner by an unscrupulous man, for no reason and with a clear disdain for life”, Figueroa wrote on Facebook.
Free on bail of $ 60,000
In a statement to a CBS correspondent, Zaveri defends himself that he shot the dog in self-defense. The dog first chased one of his friends, then ran up to him and wanted to jump into his cart. “I couldn’t avoid it because the distance between us was too small.” He fired the first shot when the dog was less than ten feet away from him. Since the dog may not have been dead yet, he got out and fired two more shots “out of pity”.
Zaveri is a sales and marketing consultant and the CEO of Zaveri Consulting. After an initial court hearing, he was released on bail of $ 60,000, but his passport and driver’s license were confiscated. He is expected to appear in court again on May 19. He has to answer for cruelty to animals. (noo)
