Punch and Judy of the week – Prater is only 251 years late

A bizarre name change in Vienna’s largest amusement park is causing general confusion. For this we award the Punch and Judy of the week!

Prater – fun in Vienna since 1766. This is what the oldest amusement park in the world advertises. Just at the start of the 2024 summer season, Prater Vienna managing director Michael Prohaska made people sit up and take notice with a bizarre plan. “In order to appear open-minded and modern, the ‘Wurstelprater’ was renamed ‘Volksprater’ in preparation for the 1873 World Exhibition. We would like to reverse this name change. The term Volksprater has simply become outdated,” says Prohaska. Because times have changed: the meeting of people of different origins and different social backgrounds is now on the agenda in Vienna. As a representative of the city of Vienna, Prohaska wanted to personally advocate for this. As if there were no other problems. The popular amusement park has been known everywhere as the “Wurstelprater” since it was founded in 1766! The new mascot “Prater Wurstel”, the newest member of the Prater family, is supposed to help with this. Great initiative, but 151 years too late.
