Huawei presented, last week, its latest range of smartphones, the Pura 70. Officialized in China, they will not be content with their domestic market, since the manufacturer today announces their upcoming availability in Europe, and more precisely in France. If the brand is reviewing the nomenclature of its devices, these are the heirs of the P range, which reached its peak before 2019 and focuses on careful photo equipment.

The Pura 70 series consists of three smartphones: the eponymous model, the Pura 70 Pro and the Pura 70 Ultra. It is on the latter that we can focus the most, due to an innovative photo block, stamped X Mage, the name of the brand’s photo division. Its one-inch main sensor (50 Mpx, the reference of which Huawei does not specify) is in fact accompanied by retractable optics – it is tested for 300,000 actuations – and variable aperture (f/1.6-f/ 4), technology that the manufacturer is one of the few to offer.

This main module is completed by a second 50 Mpx sensor flanked by optics equivalent to 90 mm (f/2.1), used for zoom (x3.5) and macro, from 5 cm. A third 40 Mpx module includes ultra-wide-angle optics. The Pura 70 and 70 Pro are certainly a little less well off, but retain, on their 50 Mpx main module, an f/1.4-f/4 variable aperture lens accompanying a slightly smaller sensor.

High-end positioning and uncertainties

Quite similar overall, the three Pura 70s are characterized by the integration of an Oled LTPO Full HD+ screen (460 ppi) promising a refresh rate oscillating between 1 and 120 Hz and a brightness of 2500 cd/m². All are IP68 certified and benefit from Kulun screen protection, developed by the brand (Glass 2 on the Pura 70 and 70 Pro, and Crystal Armor, more resistant to drops and scratches, on the Pura 70 Ultra). We have detailed all the characteristics of the Pura 70, 70 Pro and 70 Ultra in this article, at least those of which we are aware. The brand, scrutinized by the American authorities, has not yet revealed the reference of the chip that powers its trio: it is therefore, to date, impossible to certify whether or not they are compatible with 5G.

The only element that we can confirm: the Pura 70 series will not be released under Harmony OS, the brand’s in-house system, which powers its watches and tablets, but under AOSP dressed with Emotion UI, in version 14, still without services Google. Huawei promises at least two years of software upgrades and three of security patches, while recalling that it most often goes well beyond its initial promise. We expect no less from smartphones which, as evidenced by their launch price, intend to make a place for themselves in the European market for premium devices, in the wake of the shift made in China after the launch of the Mate 60 series: count 999 € for the Pura 70 12/256 GB, €1199 for the Pura 70 Pro 12/512 GB and €1499 for the Pura 70 Ultra 16/512 GB. Everything will be available for pre-order from May 2, for delivery of by the end of the same month.
