Max Verstappen secures pole position at Monaco GP ahead of Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon.

Max Verstappen is on pole at the Monaco GP. In the final part of the last lap, the Dutchman made the difference and distanced the Spaniard Fernando Alonso by 84 thousandths. Charles Leclerc (+0.106 seconds) classified himself in 3rd place for the race at his home Grand Prix. However, the Monegasque will only start from position 6 in Sunday’s race: The Ferrari driver disabled Lando Norris on a fast lap. Esteban Ocon inherited his 3rd place on the grid.

Perez with crash

Sergio Perez had to bury his hopes of a good grid position early on. In the first corner, the Mexican lost control of his Red Bull and crashed heavily into the guardrail. Fortunately, the 33-year-old was able to get out of his car unharmed, but he has to start Sunday’s race from last place on the grid.

Alfa Romeo with disillusionment

There was also disappointment at Alfa Romeo. Despite solid practice runs, grid positions 15 and 19 turned out to be sobering for Valtteri Bottas and Guanyu Zhou. Bottas just made it into the second qualifying round, but had no chance there.
