It was two goals against the flow of the game that should lead FC Lugano back into the last four for the first time since 2016: First Jonathan Sabbatini (73.) used a cross pass from Mattia Bottani, who had sprinted, seven minutes later Sandi Lovric decided the game with the 4:2 from a short distance.

Another Thun comeback is missing

Ex-Luganesi Alexander Gerndt, of all people, brought the excitement back up with a penalty goal in the 84th minute, but the underclass didn’t get the “lucky punch” – despite two big chances shortly before the end of regular time.

It was the 35-year-old Swede who was at the origin of the second Thun goal in the repeat of the 2019 quarter-finals of the cup. His cross was found by Pius Dorn, who had scored the temporary 2-2 equalizer by taking a direct shot.

After this goal in the 50th minute, the momentum was on the host’s side, who, after GC and Servette, also prepared to steer the Ticino team out of the cup. While the Challenge League club lacked clear chances, the favored Lugano showed themselves more calm and used two of their rare chances to make a decision at the beginning of the final phase.

The Ticino team also got off to a better start in the game. Before the end of the first quarter of an hour, Lugano 84 seconds and Thun coordination problems on the defensive were enough for a double strike:
