Speculation that Queen Elizabeth II might abdicate has been going on for years. But it doesn't look like it.

On April 21st, Queen Elizabeth II celebrates her 95th birthday. Even in old age, the monarch apparently does not want to go into royal retirement and leave the throne to her son Prince Charles (72, "Highgrove: A Garden Celebrated"). In the past few years there has been repeated speculation, but even with almost 95 years of age, the queen is fit enough to exercise her office. An insider has now revealed this to the US magazine "People". Because the queen should be in the best of health.

"Neither their physical nor mental health deteriorates," explains the anonymous source. Another person from the royal family is said to have also confirmed that the Queen is "doing well" and that she is in "good shape". The corona pandemic also has a good side for the 95-year-old. The insider is sure that it is "quite nice" for Queen Elizabeth II that she does not have to feel the pressure of a busy schedule at the moment. It could even be that this was the only brief period of rest she had ever really had in her life.

"There are no plans"

The Queen has occasionally been to public appointments in recent months, but mostly digitally from Windsor Castle. She is spending the pandemic there with her husband Prince Philip, who will celebrate his 100th birthday this summer.

At the end of 2019, a spokesman for Prince Charles had confirmed to the magazine that a change on the throne was not planned. The spokesman said at the time: "There are no plans to change the regulation at the age of 95 – or at any other age." Charles is first in line to the British throne ahead of Prince William (38).
