Prince William, 41, was absent from the funeral service of his godfather Constantine of Greece, †82, on February 18, 2023. King Charles, 75, was also unable to be present in Athens. They were represented in the Cathedral of the Annunciation by Princess Anne, 73, and Lady Gabriella Windsor, 42. In order to pay final respects to the Greek exiled monarch, another memorial service was actually supposed to take place in January 2024. This had to be postponed for a month due to Charles’ prostate surgery.

Now the time has come: On Wednesday, February 27th, the big event will take place in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle – to which royals from all over Europe are expected. Unfortunately not the British monarch.

King Charles: Secretly attending lunch?

It wasn’t clear at first in January, but King Charles will miss out again and won’t be able to attend King Constantine’s memorial service.

However, there is a glimmer of hope: a dinner will be held at Windsor Castle afterwards, in which Charles will attend “due to family ties”, as the Catalan daily newspaper “La Vanguardia” claims.

Will Prince William pay his last respects to his godfather?

Queen Camilla will represent her husband at the official memorial service, the British court reports. She is said to be accompanied by several as yet unnamed members of the royal family. Maybe also from Prince William? His participation is probably deliberately kept open, as the heir to the throne is currently busy looking after the children and his wife Catherine, Princess of Wales, 42, who is recovering at home from planned abdominal surgery.

These royals have been confirmed so far

Other commitments from royals that have been confirmed include:

Another Orthodox memorial service in London

There will also be an Orthodox memorial service for Constantine on February 28, 2024 at St. Sophia Cathedral in Bayswater, west London. Members of the Greek royal family may also be present there.

Constantine died on January 10, 2023 in Athens at the age of 82. The former king of Greece previously suffered a severe stroke. Six days later he was buried in the Tatoi cemetery, 20 kilometers north of Athens, in the presence of his family and several royals who had come from all over the world.
