It is the second appearance as queen: On Sunday, January 21, 2024, King Frederik and Queen Mary will take part in their first service in Aarhus. Not only Mary, but also her daughters stand out with their interesting choice of clothing.

It’s been exactly a week Queen Mary, 51, monarch of Denmark. The 51-year-old hasn’t made many appearances so far. This makes it all the more important to attend the festive service to mark the change of throne in Aarhus. An appointment where not only King Frederik’s wife pulls out all the fashion stops. You can read about the details that are particularly noticeable here.

Queen Mary opts for a colorful coronation look

As the church bell rings for the service, Mary steps out of the limousine in a radiant purple Soeren Le Schmidt dress. She has a dark blue cape thrown over her shoulders to protect her from the cold. A small hat, smooth leather gloves, pumps from Jimmy Choo and diamond earrings from Bruun Rasmussen make her church service look perfect. It’s a bright dress that immediately brings back memories of another important royal event.

Queen Mary already wore her Soeren Le Schmidt dress to the coronation of King Charles in Westminster Abbey. At that time, however, the hair was pinned up and the hat had a net veil. This time she prefers to wear her hair open to the church service and the accessories also differ in material and color. In addition to the meaning of her outfit, the color also plays an important role: the color purple represents, among other things, humility, virtue, but also transformation.

Princess Isabella and Princess Josephine wear their mother’s coats

Already at the proclamation of King Frederik, Mary opened her wardrobe for her daughters. Princess Isabella was allowed to borrow black pumps from Valentino, while Princess Josephine opted for her mother’s dark blue Prada coat, which she had previously worn in 2015. For the church service in Aarhus, both princesses wear coats from Queen Mary. Isabella, the older one, chooses a light blue Prada coat with black, round buttons. Josephine opts for a similarly colorful look and presents herself in the Andiata coat, which Mary had already worn in public in 2021 and 2015.

The color purple dominates

This can’t be a coincidence: Queen Margrethe, 83, Princess Benedikte, 79, and Queen Mary are each wearing purple dresses at the service in Aarhus. According to “Billebladet” and “Stilling Church,” the color purple has deep meaning in Christianity. It is intended to stand for reflection, prayer, meditation and inner transformation and is primarily used during Advent and Lent. Advent is already over, but Lent begins in mid-February. Maybe that’s why this bright color was chosen, or perhaps they wanted to symbolize the transformation of the Danish crown.
