The Swedish royal family made a brilliant appearance at the opening of Parliament. While Queen Silvia was still present at the service, she was absent from the evening celebrations. Now the court is commenting on her sudden absence.

As always, the opening of the Swedish Parliament on September 27, 2022 saw several celebrations attended by high-ranking members of the Swedish royal family. Not only Prince Carl Philip, 43, and Princess Sofia, 37, as well as Princess Victoria, 45, and Prince Daniel, 49, attracted attention with their charming performances. Queen Silvia, 78, caused particular amazement – suddenly there was no trace of it.

Queen Silvia surprises with an unusual gesture

King Carl Gustaf, 76, and his family attended the traditional service at Storkyrkan Cathedral in Stockholm on the morning of September 27. The monarch then ushered in the new parliamentary year in the Reichstag building. The members of the Swedish royal family arrived in a good mood at these appointments.

Victoria and Daniel in particular drew everyone’s attention as they arrived at the church, laughing and holding hands – a rare public display of love by the royals. But Queen Silvia also drew attention to herself: While Carl Gustaf, President of Parliament Andreas Norlén, who received the royal couple in front of the so-called Riksdagshuset, eagerly shook hands, Silvia merely put her hand on her heart to greet them. A gesture that surprised at first, but would later explain itself.

Because later the Swedish royals enjoyed a celebratory concert evening on the occasion of the opening of parliament – with the exception of Queen Silvia. Without prior cancellation, the 78-year-old surprisingly canceled this event.

The reason? “Her Majesty has mild cold symptoms and has therefore decided to stay away from the concert,” the court now explains to “Dana Press”. Hofinformationschefin Margareta Thorgren adds that it is a gesture of respect for the other guests. That’s why Queen Silvia probably refrained from shaking hands with Norlén.
