QuestCraft: Minecraft arrives on Oculus Quest unofficially

Many were looking forward to it. Although many essays or copies of Minecraft have emerged, especially on PC VRtoday we are talking about QuestCraftthe only real alternative to the official game dedicated to our Meta Quest.

The team of QuestCraftat the origin of the porting of Minecraft on the Meta Questoffers a solution to play natively Minecraft: Java Edition. This isn’t really an app developed expressly for our standalone headsets, but a kind of workaround. Thereby, QuestCraft uses a wrapper which runs the original game adding support for VR controls. It is, in a way, a kind of mod.

Original game requires, you must have an original copy of the game, so an account Mojang or Microsoft (the migration of accounts took place following the acquisition of Mojang by Microsoft). You are therefore invited to log in with your official account when the game starts on your Quest. Don’t panic, you won’t be lost. The start of the application happens just like for the PC version, by a dedicated launcher. However, the installation is currently not the easiest, because it is necessary to get your hands dirty.

The tutorial above shows how to do it, but here is its translated version:

  • Download the app-debug.apk and extracttoroot.zip files from this Github page ;

  • Install the .apk file via SideQuest (see tutorial), or even Oculus Developer Hub or ADBLINK.
  • Extract the contents of the “extracttoroot.zip” file on your computer and copy the contents of the “net.kdt.pojavlaunch.debug” folder to the Android/data folder of your headset using the file explorer or SideQuest;
  • Go to the unknown sources from your Quest and launch the “PojavLauncher”;
  • Identify yourself via your account;
  • Once connected, go to the settings at the bottom left of the launcher and select the option “Video and renderer”
  • Select “Renderer” and choose the option “gl4es 1.1.1 (OpenGL ES 3): exports OpenGL 2.1 + partial 3.2 (no 1.17 supported yet)”
  • Now go back to the main launcher page and click on the version number at the bottom left then select “fabric-loader-0.12.12.1.18.1”
  • You can now launch the game by clicking on “Play” and select “PLAY ANYWAY” when the prevention popup occurs.

The developers announce that the app is currently experiencing performance issues (Minecraft has never been renowned for its performance). Some adjustments will therefore be required, particularly in terms of the display distance. This is still a beta and unofficial development by a team of independent developers.

If you haven’t taken the plunge yet, you can treat yourself to a Meta Quest 2 at the house of Bakerthe Fnac, Darty Where Amazon for €349.99.
