When we talk about medical series, it is impossible not to mention Emergencies and Grey’s Anatomy, two founding fictions of the genre which are often compared to each other. If the first has always adopted a more realistic tone, showing the economic and logistical realities of a Chicago emergency department, the second has always assumed its much more “soap” side, the love stories of the characters being an integral part of the plot.
It was in 1994 that Urgences landed on American screens. Making realism its key word, the medical series very quickly managed to distinguish itself from its consorts, and gathered millions of viewers each week.
For 15 seasons, this fiction has been able to highlight strong social issues, often taboo in the 90s, such as HIV, homoparenthood, deafness, euthanasia, or the situation in Darfur.
More than 10 years after this successful launch, ER faced new competition with the arrival on ABC of Grey’s Anatomy, another much more soapy medical series, which continues to bring viewers together to this day.
Soon back for season 20, the fiction created by Shonda Rhimes follows the adventures of Gray Sloan Memorial, a university hospital in which many doctors in the making evolve.
With its disaster episodes, which made an impression, and its themes still anchored in the news, Grey’s Anatomy has managed to withstand the test of time, winning hands down the palm of longevity against Emergencies.
