A most powerful overheating problem graphics cards RDNA 3 that tarnishes AMD’s reputation.

Released last December, the first cards based on RDNA 3 architecture enabled AMD to position itself in relation to its competitor, NVIDIA. However, serious heating problems seem to raise questions and our colleagues from Igor’s Lab have therefore decided to investigate.

The offending steam chamber

First of all, it should be remembered, as we did when discussing the first problems, that only the Radeon RX 7900XTX cards seem to be affected by this problem which occurs at the level of the vapor chamber and leads to a card overheating.

In fact, the RX 7900XT are not affected and some RX 7900XTX are not. The cooling system used by the manufacturer must be the AMD reference one: only the cards MbA (Made by AMDmade by AMD) and some partner cards are affected.

The only “solution” offered by AMD is to call on the brand’s customer service to initiate the hardware return procedure in order to exchange the defective graphics card for a “healthy” model.

Through a very interesting article that we recommend to English speakers, Igor Wallossek from the Igor’s Lab site returned to the case. Using his contacts in the industry, he returned in particular to the ” small number of cards affected according to AMD’s Scott Herkelman.

9-11% of cards affected

Indeed, Igor Wallossek arrived at a much more worrying estimate of 9 to 11% of RX 7900XTX cards affected in the case of models sold individually. A fuzzier figure, but also arguably more important – “ well above 10% – from the side of the integrators.

Problem, the return procedures do not seem to lead to quick solutions. Concerned by the RMA, the Igor’s Lab site logically contacted the German customer service. The response came quickly, but didn’t really move things forward:

We understand that you want a replacement for your RX 7900 XTX. It is important to know that, at the moment, we are not able to replace your card because we do not have stock available in our warehouses. “.

AMD specifies that it will have to be patient, without however communicating on a possible restocking date. It specifies, however, that it is still possible to request a refund if you do not wish to wait.

Without confirmation from AMD, Igor Wallossek believes that these delays are linked to AMD’s desire to provide 100% functional cards: “ nothing would be more detrimental to the image of the group than to send cards subject to the same defect “. Hopefully things will settle down quickly.
