Radio audiences: Europe 1 is making further progress

Once again, the radio audiences revealed by Médiamétrie, Thursday January 11, attest to a drop in listening to the media: in November and December 2023, radio recorded 69.6% cumulative audience (AC) , or 38.7 million daily listeners, compared to 71.1% a year earlier (but 68.6% in September-October 2023).

However, not all stations have low morale. Not only did music radios (NRJ, Nostalgie or even Skyrock, in particular) benefit from renewed attention over the period (31.9% cumulative audience, + 0.5 points), but on the side of generalists , Europe 1 sees, for the second time in a row, its results improve. “We are one of the strongest growers on the market”almost surprises Constance Benqué, the president of Lagardère News.

After years of free fall, the station, now an integral part of Vivendi (Canal+, CNews, etc.), recorded an increase of 0.4 points in its cumulative audience. At 4%, it reached a level that it had not exceeded for two years (4.2% in November-December 2021). “The entire grid progresses or remains stable”underlines the manager, noting that listeners stayed tuned to the stars of her channel (Sonia Mabrouk, Pascal Praud, Sophie Davant, etc.) eleven minutes more per day than a year ago (eighty -nineteen minutes in total).

Only RMC saw its listening time increase more (+ fifteen minutes in one year, for a total duration of one hundred and twenty-five minutes), while its cumulative audience fell by 0.1 point (– 23,000 listeners) , to settle at 5.7%, a level close to its historic low. “In addition to Apolline de Malherbe’s morning show, our program “L’After Foot” is progressing compared to the previous year, which was that of the Football World Cup”consoles Karim Nedjari, the general director of the Altice group station.

“Power and stability”

Among private general radio stations, RTL is undoubtedly the one that should be most worried: at 9.6% AC (– 0.7 points over one year), it continues to be sucked into a negative spiral. The one that took away the title of most listened to radio station in France in 2019, France Inter, sits at 12.5% AC. By progressing by 0.1 point over one year (84,000 additional listeners), the station “remains more than ever on the side of power and stability”, rejoices its director, Adèle Van Reeth. Both will have to do without their director of programs and editorial strategy, Yann Chouquet, expected in the spring in a similar position at France Bleu – managed by Céline Pigalle since April 2023. A welcome reinforcement for the channel to the 44 local ones in arrears and once again down, to 4.8%, by 0.1 point over one year.
