Rapper Drakeo the Ruler stabbed to death at Los Angeles festival


ATTACK – The 28-year-old rapper, whose real name was Darrell Caldwell, was fatally assaulted on Saturday night, during a concert that was to host several artists, including Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent and Ice Cube.

Rapper Drakeo the Ruler was fatally stabbed during a music festival in Los Angeles, where he was scheduled to perform with several other artists. His agent, Scott Jawson, confirmed his death Sunday, December 19, to US media. He was 28 years old.

During a fight

The artist, real name Darrell Caldwell, was assaulted during the “Once Upon a Time in LA” concert, which was to host Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube and 50 Cent. Shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, a fight broke out and a suspect brandished a sharp weapon, seriously injuring the rapper. Taken to hospital in critical condition, Drakeo the Ruler died of his injuries.

The organizers immediately canceled the festival. “Out of respect for those involved and in coordination with the local authorities, artists and organizers, it was decided not to continue” the planned shows, they said in a statement.

For the time being, no arrests have been made, reports the spokesperson for the Los Angeles police, officer Luis Garcia, quoted by the Los Angeles Times.

Snoop Dogg for his part tweeted that he was in his dressing room when he was informed of the incident and decided to leave the scene immediately. “I am saddened by the events of last night at the Once Upon a Time in LA festival,” he wrote. “My condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Drakeo the Ruler.”

Darell Caldwell had managed to make a name for himself in 2015, with songs tinged with black humor, well received by the critics. With more than a million listeners on Spotify, he had notably collaborated with the Canadian rapper Drake.

In 2017, the artist was arrested for possession of weapons and in 2018 for murder in connection with the shooting death of a 24-year-old man. He had then served several years in prison. Before being acquitted in 2019. But in the process, he was indicted for association with criminal gangs. He had accepted a deal with the courts and was released from prison in 2020.

While still in prison, he released the album “Thank You for Using GTL”, in reference to the company that controls telephone services in prisons. Drakeo had recorded the lyrics of his songs using these services.
