Contactless technology should know a certain improvement in the coming years, and thus appear on new devices.
NFC (Near Field Communication) has long been used to operate contactless solutions, such as Apple Pay, or credit cards integrated into your smartphone. And if we must recognize that the technology is already quite extraordinary, it should nevertheless make a completely different face by the end of the decade.
From 0.5 to 3 centimeters
What if one day all you had to do was pass your smartphone carelessly in front of a terminal to pay? This is what the NFC Forum, the entity bringing together hundreds of major tech companies (Qualcomm, Apple, Huawei, Google, Sony) and which is in charge of implementing the NFC standards used in electronic devices, wants. sold around the world.
According to the roadmap intended to describe the development of the technology until 2028 that it has just published, real changes should appear. The most important will relate to the range of the contactless connection that can be established. Today 0.5 centimeters, it should be increased to reach 3 centimeters. A multiplication by six, which would make these payments real contactless payments.
Wireless charging for all?
And the list of innovations does not stop there, since the NFC Forum also wants to increase the power of wireless charging, which will increase from 1 to 3W. To do what ? Well, according to this regulator, “ this change will bring wireless power and charging to new and smaller form factors, breaking the usual industrial design while defining new markets “. Imagine the arrival of this technology directly on wireless headphones!
Another feature that could see the light of day with these changes would be the possibility of transforming any smartphone into a payment terminal. Because, even it is the credit card which is currently the preferred means of payment for consumers, this novelty would however make it possible to carry out transactions from any place.
Suffice to say that the future, which will be presented this Tuesday, June 27 by the NFC Forum during a public webinar, looks particularly interesting.
