The Resizable BAR grants processor full access to the video memory of the Graphic card to accelerate exchanges and boost general performance.
Since the introduction of technology Smart Access Memory by AMD in 2020, we started talking a lot about direct access to video memory. An option better known as Resizable BAR.
Official support at Intel dates back to the 10th generation of CPUs (Comet Lake) while at AMD, it dates from the Ryzen 3000 series. However, the thing is older and should be accessible to more PCs: a modder told us prove.
Gains of up to 12%
Called ReBarUEFI, the project is led by a certain xCuri0 who made it available on the Github platform and which, as its name suggests, involves having a motherboard with UEFI BIOS. There is no point in trying this if your configuration is still in legacy BIOS. At the same time…
ReBarUEFI is a module that acts at boot time (boot) of the PC. Indeed, by inserting itself between different starting instructions, the mod is able to specify to the system that it can and must activate the Resizable BAR with the direct consequence of better performance.
We have not been able to verify this, but its author actually estimates that we can benefit from a performance improvement of up to 12% on a machine based on Core i3-3470 and Radeon RX 580.
Be careful, we are talking about modifying the BIOS
As indicated in the introduction, the Resizable BAR is a much older technique than Smart Access Memory from AMD. It dates back to the early 2010s with, in particular, Intel’s Sandy Bridge platform.
However, the xCuri0 mod cannot work miracles:
- The results will vary greatly depending on the configuration as well as the games.
- It won’t be able to turn your old machine into a racing car. In addition, we must not forget that this is a mod and that its use is not covered by any warranty.
Finally, messing with the motherboard BIOS is a risky thing. It is advisable to follow the instructions to the letter and even not to start without some experience of the thing.
