Among the many creatures present in Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon”, one in particular was more difficult to realize. Explanations from the director.
More than 40 creature makeups were created for the first part of Rebel Moon. With this space opera, Zack Snyder signs his passion project – more than 30 years in development. On screen, the filmmaker, never short of ideas to impress, outdid himself with the design of the aliens. “IThere are things you barely see, especially in the backgrounds“, regrets the director in an interview with AlloCiné.
For this film, Zack Snyder surrounded himself with Justin Raleigh, who produced the makeup effects for the film. Among the many creations, one required more work than the others: the spider-alien Harmada, present on the planet Daggus. This creature only appears in one scene of Rebel Moon and manages to steal the show – it may be the best thing in the film.
Behind this character, we find Jena Malone who spent hours transforming herself. Far from being traumatized by this experience – not always very pleasant – she states on her Instagram account that Harmada’s role is “the best creature [qu’elle ait] had to play in [sa] career“. She shares, in particular, several photos of her impressive preparation.
“This alien was the most difficult to make because of his mix of organic special effects and his digital bodyexplains Zack Snyder. We built a crazy rolling platform for her to move around on. Stunt performers were pushing her to make her move forward, it was really tricky.“
After numerous tests, the technical teams finally found the perfect solution so that the actress could move to fight. Movements that the director compares to “a ballet“. On screen, the result is more than successful, enough to arouse the desire to see Harmada again in part 2 – which seems complicated.
