There is a major recall for nuts that have been sold both individually and as trail mix in several supermarkets. Poisoning by hydrogen cyanide can occur.

Beware, another major recall has been issued. The Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety published a warning against nuts and nut mixtures that can contain hydrocyanic acid. The products were sold in numerous supermarkets and should not be consumed under any circumstances.

Specifically, these are nuts from Carl Wilhelm Clasen GmbH, which informs about the recall of the following batches in a press release:

According to the manufacturer, the nuts were sold throughout Germany in branches of the following supermarkets and shops:

  • akzenta GmbH & Co KG
  • Citti Markets GmbH & Co KG
  • Edeka
  • Famila Handelsmarkt Kiel GmbH & Co KG
  • FrischParadies GmbH & Co. KG

  • Transgourmet Deutschland GmbH & Co OHG

Symptoms of poisoning possible

The reason for the recall is that it cannot be ruled out that there are bitter almonds among the nuts. These are not to be confused with regular almonds, also known as sweet almonds, because they not only taste bitter, they also contain amygdalin. When it is digested, hydrogen cyanide is released in the body. This in turn can lead to severe symptoms of intoxication. Symptoms of poisoning include headache, vomiting, and shortness of breath.

To be on the safe side, the nuts should not be eaten! The affected products are said to have already been taken off the market, but anyone who has already bought one of the items can return it to the relevant branch. There, customers can get the purchase price reimbursed even without presenting the receipt.
