Recall: STEC bacteria found in lettuce

Do you always have something fresh in the house? Most of them do it that way. Because if you have a salad in the fridge, you are more likely to reach for it in the evening than for frozen pizza. In particular, pre-packaged salads from the supermarket have saved us many a day's work – but we should be careful with them.

Again and again there is a warning against the high bacterial load in packaged lettuce. But now there is a specific case: The company GARTENFRISCH Jung GmbH is currently informing about a recall. It's about lettuce, which was sold under the own brand "Gut & Favorig" in several supermarkets across Germany.

The following product is specifically affected by the recall:

The salad mix was mainly sold in branches of the supermarket chains Marktkauf and Edeka. According to "produktwarnung.eu", the following federal states are affected: Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Hesse, Lower Saxony, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia.

STEC bacteria can be dangerous

The reason for the recall is the discovery of so-called STEC bacteria. According to the manufacturer, these are E. coli germs that produce shiga toxin and can lead to febrile gastrointestinal diseases. In the worst case, the bacteria can spread in the body and trigger the so-called hemolytic-uremic syndrome, as the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety warns. The salad should therefore no longer be eaten.

The salad mix is ​​said to have already been taken off the market, but if you already have it at home, you should dispose of it or bring it back to the store. There, customers should be reimbursed the purchase amount even without submitting a receipt.

Other lettuce or products from the manufacturer should not be affected.
