Republican MPs argued there was already enough investigation into the attack by law enforcement and parliament. You accused the Democrats of not wanting to pursue unbiased information, but rather to pursue a party-political agenda.
In May, the Republicans in the US Senate prevented the establishment of an independent commission of inquiry with the same reasoning – despite a previous bipartisan agreement on such a commission at committee level. The Democrats have a majority in the Senate. However, it is extremely tight, so that the Republicans can block most projects due to procedural rules. The Democrats then decided on their own to install such a body in the House of Representatives, where they have a majority.
Five dead
Supporters of then President Donald Trump (75) stormed the seat of the US Congress in Washington on January 6th. Five people were killed, including a police officer.
Trump had to face impeachment proceedings because of the attack because he had previously incited his supporters in a speech. However, at the end of the trial, the Republican was acquitted.

«One of the darkest days»
House chairwoman Democrat Nancy Pelosi said on Wednesday January 6th was “one of the darkest days” in American history. The investigative committee should undertake a more in-depth analysis of the background. The aim is that such an attack never repeats itself.
There was support from the White House for the actions of the Democrats. The spokeswoman for US President Joe Biden, Jen Psaki, said Pelosi – who was instrumental in driving the project forward – was acting “in an appropriate manner” after an independent commission had previously been rejected.
