Record $3 billion US aid to Kyiv as clashes persist despite ceasefire

  • This new US aid of 3 billion dollars notably includes 50 Bradley tracked armored vehicles of the M2A2 type. “The Bradleys will further enhance Ukraine’s ability to conduct complex maneuvers in virtually all weather conditions and on all terrains, particularly in the south and east of the country”, added Laura Cooper. However, this unprecedented aid does not include the tanks that kyiv is asking for from the West.
  • Artillery duels in Bakhmout, a city in the East, almost emptied of its inhabitants. The shots were heard on each side of the front, despite the ceasefire decreed unilaterally by President Vladimir Putin, on the occasion of Orthodox Christmas.
  • This first major truce since the start of the invasion of the country ten months ago was to come into force today, at noon Moscow time (10 a.m. in France), and run until Saturday evening (10 p.m. in France). The Russian army assures that it respects it, but accuses kyiv of continuing the bombardments, according to its daily report published on Friday.
  • Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, accused Moscow of using “Christmas as an excuse to attempt, if only temporarily, to halt the progression” Ukrainian forces in the Donbass. Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba ruled on Thursday that the ceasefire ” not [pouvait] not and don’t [devait] not be taken seriously”.
  • A fire station in Kherson was bombed, causing several victims, as well as the city of Kramatorsksaid the deputy head of the Ukrainian presidential administration.
  • Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko visits Russian troops stationed on a military base in his country, the Belarusian defense ministry announced on Friday.
  • Germany announced on Friday the delivery of some 40 Marder infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine before the end of the first quarter.
