Bern (awp/ats) – Rega recorded a record number of monthly flights in July 2022. In total, the Swiss Air Rescue Guard carried out no less than 2,120 helicopter missions last month.
Never had Rega recorded more than 2,000 flights in the space of a single month, Rega director Ernst Kohler said in the headlines of Tamedia online on Sunday. The latest peak is 33% higher than the July average for the past five years.
Ten years ago, 1,000 missions a month was a remarkable figure, according to Mr. Kohler. In 2021, Rega already had a record year, which will most likely be broken again in 2022.
In the past six months, Rega helicopters have already clocked 25% more flights compared to the same period in 2021. A development that Kohler explains not only by the boom in hiking and mountaineering after the pandemic, but also by the melting of permafrost, which makes rockfalls more frequent.
