Regulation of the pack – Valais wild guard kills young she-wolf – News

  • The Valais Wildhut killed a young female wolf in the Nendaz region on Saturday.
  • According to the canton, the animal had been in the vicinity of a settlement area.
  • State Councilor Frédéric Favre (FDP) had granted permission to regulate the wolf pack in the Val d’Hérens.

The Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) had previously responded positively to the request for regulation from the canton of Valais and approved an extension of the launch perimeter.

“The rangers hope that the shooting will also have a deterrent effect, so that the pack does not go near settlements and its impact on pastoralism is limited,” writes the Department for Hunting, Fishing and Wildlife in a communiqué. The killed animal will now be referred to the Institute for Fish and Wildlife Health at the University of Bern for diagnosis and identification.

The wolf pack in the Val d’Hérens previously consisted of five wolves. The Walliser Wildhut wants to continue to monitor the pack and, if necessary, carry out the second approved kill. The parent animals are spared. The regulatory approval is valid until the end of March 2022.
