How does a red cast develop?

A red cast can have the following causes:

  • Reddish pigments: The hair has natural reddish pigments that make a red tinge visible in appropriate lighting conditions.
  • Haircolor: After dyeing, reddish pigments from former dyeings still show through.
  • Red tinge due to bleaching: Reddish pigments are the most persistent during the bleaching process, while darker ones are released from the hair more quickly. So there is often a red cast during the individual bleaching steps. Note: The red pigments only disappear completely after bleaching for several sessions!

How can I remove a red cast?

  • Hair stylist: The safest way to get rid of a strong red tinge is one Hairdressing appointment. The professionals know what to do! This saves you time-consuming self-tests and probably a lot of sweat beads on your forehead … Because with a strong red cast, we should let the specialist in, so as not to stress the hair even further. Even if you are planning a bleaching, you should definitely let your hairdresser go, because most of the mishaps happen here!
  • Shampoo: You can find further help in the drugstore … Here you can look for shampoos that are aimed at eliminating a slight red tinge. For that they have to green color pigments contain. These types of shampoos are with it complementary to red and so neutralize the color cast. Attention: A silver shampoo contains violet color pigments and is therefore only a suitable remedy for a yellow tinge (purple is the complementary color to yellow). Contrary to popular belief, a silver shampoo does not help with a red cast!

Remove red cast with home remedies

  • Black tea makes the hair a little darker and can therefore be effective even with a slight red cast. Boil the tea and let it steep for a long time. After cooling, you use the tea as a hair conditioner. Leave the conditioner in the air for ten minutes and then again with a towel wrapped for half an hour. Then the hair is rinsed with plenty of water. You will probably have to repeat the method several times until the effect is achieved.
  • Baking powder in shampoo: Add two tablespoons of baking soda to a walnut-sized portion of shampoo. Apply the mixture to your hair. After a reaction time of two to three minutes, rinse your hair thoroughly. Caution: Baking soda strains your hair and lets it dry out! So give them an extra dose of care with a hair treatment afterwards.
  • Lemon juice and olive oil: Mix the juice of a lemon with a tablespoon of olive oil and spread everything over your hair. You can leave the mass in for up to an hour before rinsing it out thoroughly. Then wash your hair with shampoo and care for it with a hair treatment.
