From January 1, 2024, vehicles that emit more than 117 grams of CO2 per kilometer (g/km) will be penalized for purchase. For the most polluting large cylinders, this tax could now reach 60,000 euros.
This is one of the lessons of the 2024 budget presented by the government on Wednesday: the vehicles which emit the most CO2 will see their ecological penalty increase. From January 1, 2024, vehicles that emit more than 117 grams of CO2 per kilometer (g/km) will be penalized several dozen additional euros.
Until then, the hinge level was set at 122 grams. This penalty is transferred directly to the purchase price of the car. So, report The Parisian this Friday, the favorite vehicles of the French like the Clio or the Peugeot 208 (petrol and 100 horsepower under the hood) will cost more, respectively 50 and 125 euros.
If all electric vehicles are exempt from the penalty, in detail, we see that all manufacturers on the market are concerned. And as shown in the table below, the sums can soar as soon as a high-end and very powerful vehicle is chosen: in fact, the maximum amount of the penalty has been increased to 60,000 euros compared to 50,000 euros currently.
Car model | CO2 release | Environmental penalty 2023 | Environmental penalty 2024 |
---|---|---|---|

The Parisian also reminds that in addition to CO2 emissions, it is also necessary to monitor the weight of the vehicle. From January 1, the ecological penalty will apply to cars from 1.6 tonnes, compared to 1.8 tonnes today. Next year, it will be 10 euros between 1.6 and 1.8 tonnes, then 15 euros between 1.8 and 1.9 tonnes, 20 euros between 1.9 and 2 tonnes and so on up to 2.1 tonnes. From this weight, the additional kilo remains stable at 30 euros, specifies the daily.

In the same budget, the government chose to increase the amount of aid – color bonus or conversion bonus – for the purchase of a virtuous vehicle. Objective: to give a new boost to sales! The new amount should be known before the end of the year. Currently, if you do not buy a car at a price above 47,000 euros, the ecological bonus is 5,000 euros for households whose reference tax income (RFR) per share exceeds 14,089 euros. For a lower tax income, it is 7000 euros.
