The re-election in Berlin does not create an election thriller: all twelve holders of direct mandates after the 2021 federal election can defend their district. Overall, however, the traffic light has to accept losses.

The partial repeat of the federal election in Berlin did not bring about any changes among the directly elected representatives of the twelve capital constituencies. Even in the districts where a significant proportion of voters were called upon to vote again, none of the winners in September 2021 were pushed out, as the state election management announced that night.

The direct mandates in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf (Michael Müller), Tempelhof-Schöneberg (Kevin Kühnert), Neukölln (Hakan Demir) and Spandau (Helmut Kleebank) remain in the hands of the SPD. The Greens retained their three direct mandates in Mitte (Hanna Steinmüller), Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg – Prenzlauer Berg Ost (Canan Bayram) and Pankow (Stefan Gelbhaar).

Mario Czaja in Marzahn-Hellersdorf, Thomas Heilmann in Steglitz-Zehlendorf and Monika Grütters in Reinickendorf were confirmed for the CDU. The Left retained the constituencies of Treptow-Köpenick (Gregor Gysi) and Lichtenberg (Gesine Lötzsch).

In Pankow 85 percent of the votes were canceled

Due to numerous breakdowns, the September 2021 federal election in Berlin had to be repeated in a fifth of the electoral districts. Pankow was the most affected by the repetition of Berlin’s twelve constituencies, where the votes of more than 85 percent of voters were annulled. This was followed by Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf with 42.7 percent, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg – Prenzlauer Berg Ost with 33.8 percent and Reinickendorf with 31.7 percent.

Overall, the parties in the traffic light coalition suffered losses in the federal government, while the CDU and AfD were able to make gains. As the state election management announced after counting all electoral districts, the SPD remained the strongest force, but lost 1.2 percentage points compared to the partially annulled result from September 2021. The FDP lost 0.9 percentage points, the Greens 0.3 points. The CDU gained 1.3 percentage points and the AfD gained 1.0 points.
