Once again, the majority will have to count on the votes of certain members of the opposition, in particular Les Républicains, to pass its texts. “We are barely at the end of a year of Emmanuel Macron’s second term when we have the impression that he has been there for so long and that it is soon the end. There are four years left, which is very long on major important projects, “explains the political scientist. “It is difficult to grasp where he will find the reserves, we feel that on the left, there is resistance, and on the right the positions are now clarified, in particular because the senatorial [qui auront lieu fin septembre, ndlr] will strengthen the Republican force in the Senate or in any case install it for the rest of the presidential term”.
Especially since Elisabeth Borne did not choose any member of the LRs to join her government, and preferred to “seek reinforcements” within the majority, in particular on the side of the National Assembly, with the arrival of Aurore Bergé at the Ministry of Solidarity and Families, or even Sabrina Agresti-Roubache at the Delegate Ministry in charge of the City. For Jean-Christophe Gallien, “that means that Emmanuel Macron’s room for maneuver on his right edge is still extremely reduced and that by the European elections of 2024, next year, we will have to scrap in Parliament, in the National Assembly in particular, and perhaps also in the Senate”.
Because the European elections of 2024 are approaching and for the political scientist, it is the moment when “everyone will take out their political knives”. This is where the political parties, with full proportional voting throughout the territory, will try to make the biggest scores. I am obviously thinking of the left and the Greens, but also of the Republicans who will want to mark their territory,” he says.
