In the coming hours this Tuesday, the French will know the name of the new Prime Minister. Elisabeth Borne’s successor will inherit a fractured majority and will have to campaign for the presidential majority list in the European elections and the specifications are not simple for the new tenant of rue de Varennes.

Elisabeth Borne’s successor must first embody the “regeneration” desired by Emmanuel Macron in his wishes to the French on December 31. In short: to breathe new impetus after a difficult first part of the mandate, marked by the adoption of the pension reform by 49.3 and the tumultuous vote on the immigration law. If Gabriel Attal, the current Minister of National Education, is considered for the position, the announcement from the Élysée will be made officially this Tuesday.

Resolder to avoid implosion

In Matignon, whoever is appointed by Emmanuel Macron will also be responsible for the campaign for the European elections. The list of the presidential majority is currently given far behind that of the National Rally. The next tenant of rue de Varennes will therefore have to avoid the humiliation of a heavy defeat, and face Jordan Bardella, widely favored in the polls.

The new Prime Minister will finally take the lead of a divided majority, which will therefore have to be reconciled to avoid implosion. Two texts are currently on the legislative agenda: the constitutionalization of abortion as well as the bill on the end of life.
