The donation campaign reached a new record

Nothing was taken for granted last year, and yet we didn't hesitate for a moment to start again with our "A scarf for life" campaign – together with our partner, the independent children's rights organization Save the Children. Because we were sure that the fate of the Syrian refugee children will continue to move you. However, we did not expect this sensational result: You have donated around 461,000 euros, dear readers, more than in any year before. A new, great record!

Generous than ever – glimmer of hope for children in Syria

While donations from aid organizations around the world collapse because people simply have less money available due to Corona or prefer to hold back due to the uncertain times, you did it exactly differently. You have never been more generous, your solidarity with the youngest, most defenseless victims of the war is unbroken. We are pleased and moved. We say thank you from the bottom of our hearts for this great commitment.

By the beginning of January, our partner, the wool manufacturer Lana Grossa, had sold more than 26,000 wool packages and around 2,700 ready-knitted scarves. In addition, Save the Children received direct donations of more than 173,000 euros. "The pandemic is displacing many topics, but that doesn't mean that they won't continue," says TV journalist and presenter Ingo Zamperoni, who has supported the scarf campaign for years. "We are still getting sad reports from Syria. But the children there will not let themselves get down, they want to build up their country and look to the future. Every donation helps to give the children the tools they need for a better future."

We have received a lot of very personal messages from you, dear readers. You knitted the scarf in circles, gave it away or made two children's scarves out of a wool package. The scarf, as the photos show, is part of your everyday life, it is worn when walking your dog, when shopping, with colleagues during social distancing in front of the office and even during home fitness training.

For the children in Syria, your commitment is a glimmer of hope. Almost ten years after the conflict began, the pandemic and growing poverty are exacerbating the country's education crisis; in the north two thirds of all children do not go to school. Many children are chronically malnourished and even very young children are seriously ill. There are also serious economic problems, including in neighboring countries to which millions of people have fled. Lebanon, where the refugees make up a quarter of the population, has almost completely collapsed economically, with more than 50 percent of the population living at or below the poverty line. This exacerbates the daily tensions, for the refugee families every day becomes a struggle for survival.
