Retro rugby 2023: Stade Toulousain on the edge

by Sebastien Salpietro (iDalgo)

Toulouse once again won the French championship! At the end of a final with a completely crazy scenario, Stade Toulousain won against La Rochelle (29 – 26) and lifted the 22nd Brennus Shield in its history. From the start of the match, everyone understood that this final was going to fulfill all expectations. After an engaged and spectacular first half, Antoine Hastoy transformed Kerr-Barlow’s try and sent the two teams to the locker room with a perfect tie (13 – 13). In the second half, it was Stade Rochelais who came to put their hand on the game and who dominated by taking the lead shortly before the end (22 – 26, 71′). But on the last Toulouse opportunity, Romain Ntamack released a new high-class action. Starting from his camp, the 10 of Toulouse went up the whole field and slipped into the mouse hole left in the La Rochelle defense to score the title try for Stade Toulousain, transformed behind by Thomas Ramos (29 – 26). Even if Toulouse did not control its final from start to finish, it was indeed the experience and class of its great players which made the difference at the very end of the match to turn the match around.
