Return traffic was backed up in front of the Gotthard in the afternoon.
The time loss was up to almost two hours.
At 10 p.m. a loss of time of around an hour was to be expected.
There was a traffic jam on the A2 Chiasso motorway towards Gotthard between Faido TI and the rest area in Airolo TI, as the TCS reported on X. The traffic service stated that the cause was traffic congestion on several sections.
In the meantime, the tunnel was also closed for the use of a broken down vehicle due to a defective bus. Travelers heading towards Basel and Zurich were recommended to take the alternative route via the A13 motorway and the San Bernardino tunnel.
Already on Saturday there was a 15-kilometer-long traffic jam in front of the Gotthard north portal. The time lost was two hours and 30 minutes in the afternoon. The traffic jam was longer than on the Easter weekend.
Many travelers had probably “fled” from the rest of Switzerland to Ticino because of the cold and wet weather. The weather forecast for the weekend was significantly better for Ticino.
