At the same time as the announcement of the new entry-level EOS R100 body, Canon unveils the RF 28mm F2.8 STM, a lens primarily intended for its 24×36 sensor hybrids but which, due to its very compact design called “pancake “, would go very well with the small EOS R100.
The smallest lens in the RF mount
The RF 28mm F2.8 STM is, to date, the smallest RF mount lens at only 120g on the scale for approximately 2.5cm in length. In fact, it is more of a sensor cap than an optic. Canon thus indicates that it could remain permanently on a device to always have something shoot. Although very compact, it has a configurable ring and an AF/MF switch. This ring can be used as a focusing ring, but it is possible to assign other functions to it (aperture, exposure, exposure time, etc.)
“Seagull wing” contact lenses
This 28 mm is not a simple wide-angle lens. It has several aspherical lenses in the shape of “gull wings”, in Canon’s terminology. An atypical design to limit diffraction, improve resolution, while minimizing distortions and maintaining a contained template. The rear lenses are just as original, since they are entirely rectangular and very close to the frame to reduce the size of the lens as much as possible.
