Discus giants deliver great World Cup final thriller

Daniel Stahl weighs 140 kilos, is two meters tall and is making himself the most physically impressive world champion in athletics. The discus thrower counters the competition with the last throw. Sha’Carri Richardson soon becomes the fastest woman in the world.

The German champion Henrik Janssen took eighth place in a gripping discus final at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest. The 25-year-old threw 63.80 meters in his best attempt. As expected, Janssen was not able to put the favorites for the medals under pressure. As at the 2019 World Cup, the giant Swede Daniel Stahl won the title.

After the Olympic champion had been pushed out of the lead in the last round by the 206 centimeter tall defending champion Kristjan Ceh from Slovenia, he struck back impressively. The Swedish 140-kilo colossus won with the world championship record of 71.46 meters in front of Ceh, who threw the discus to 70.02 meters. European champion Mykolas Alekna, the 20-year-old son of Lithuania’s discus legend Virgilijus Alekna, finished third with 68.85 meters.

Sha’Carri Richardson has been crowned the new 100 meter champion. The American won in Budapest on Monday in 10.65 seconds. Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson took silver in 10.72 seconds. Defending champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Price from Jamaica, who has already been world champion five times, secured bronze in 10.77 seconds. European champion Gina Lückenkemper from Germany had clearly missed the intended entry into her first World Cup final.

For Richardson it was the first title at the first World Cup. The 23-year-old failed to qualify for the World Cup last year. At the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo, she had to watch blocked. A doping test revealed marijuana use, which is why it was banned. Richardson explained this as dealing with the pressure and strain of her mother’s death.

In the triple jump, the only 18-year-old favorite Jaydon Hibbert suffered a minor injury on his first attempt and dropped out of the competition. Hugues Fabrice Zango from Burkina Faso won with 17.64 meters ahead of Cubans Lázaro Martínez (17.41) and Cristian Nápoles (17.40). American Grant Holloway won the 110 meter hurdles for the third time. Holloway won in a season best of 12.96 seconds ahead of Jamaican Hansle Parchment, who was 11/100ths slower. Daniel Roberts from the USA was third.
