A week after the start of the riots in several sensitive neighborhoods in France, Emmanuel Macron calls for caution regarding the return to calm. On the executive side, the members of the government are working to clarify the announcement of the Head of State, who wishes to rebuild as quickly as possible what has been destroyed.
Caution is required at the Élysée. While Emmanuel Macron met this Tuesday some 220 elected officials who were victims of riots in their city following the death of Nahel, killed by a police officer after a refusal to comply, the president said he was “cautious” as to the evolution of the situation.
On the side of the palace, the executive first tries to clarify the only announcement made yesterday by the president, namely the emergency law to accelerate the reconstruction of buildings, transport and street furniture destroyed during the riots.
One at the same time in the neighborhoods?
For the moment, the vagueness reigns over the contours of this text which was not formally examined during the Council of Ministers on Wednesday. The entourage of the Head of State is content to specify that it will be a mixture of regulatory and legislative measures. The amount of the State’s participation remains to be defined. And the Élysée specifies that the envelope will be shared with communities and insurers.
For the rest, the priority of the president remains the return to republican order and justice. He assumes to take his time to provide political responses to the crisis. A majority executive believes that these future measures could ultimately be inspired by the famous at the same time, with both provisions to restore the human and the social in the neighborhoods, but also more firmness to fight against a form judicial impunity.
