Etna eruption paralyzes Catania airport

Etna in Sicily is the largest active volcano in Europe. Now he’s broken out again. Flight operations in Catania have been temporarily suspended. Because of the layer of ash on the streets, even two-wheelers are not allowed to drive in the city.

The airport in the Sicilian city of Catania has been closed to air traffic after the Etna volcano erupted. The airport operator announced on its website that flight operations would be suspended until 8 p.m. due to the ash rain. Due to the layer of ash on the streets, bicycles, motorcycles and other two-wheelers are not allowed to drive in the city itself on the instructions of the mayor up to and including Tuesday.

Flight operations in Catania were initially only interrupted until 11 a.m. because of the Etna ash. Travelers have been asked to contact their airline. The 3324 meter high Etna is the largest active volcano in Europe, it erupts relatively often.

Around 10 million passengers used Catania Airport in 2022. It is central to traffic in the east of the island of Sicily, one of Italy’s most popular tourist destinations. In July, the airport was closed for days due to a major fire.
