ROG Thor 850W Platinum: How to choose your power supply?

As part of the operation ASUS PCDIY, that we made with ASUS ROG, it was a question of mounting a complete and identifiable / purchasable configuration directly from their site. More information in our article: Properly build your PC Gamer in 2022.

Identify its component power

Power is the lifeblood of your setup, otherwise it wouldn’t be possible to turn your computer on or keep it running at its best. However, if we can be tempted, when in doubt, to jump directly on a very powerful or very expensive power supply, it is interesting to understand how it works. On the one hand, to choose a product adapted to his expectations, but also to be able to control its energy consumption for a reduced electricity bill. Finally, some power supplies are equipped with aesthetic frills that unnecessarily increase the price, depending on the research of each, or even characteristics specific to a more advanced or specific use.

Output voltage

Whatever your configuration, ASUS ROG has a range that will adapt to it. However, the output voltage is the key research point since it allows you to supply energy to all the components of your system. To simplify things, the manufacturer offers to directly identify the one you need using software integrated into the site, on which you must notify your processor and graphics card.

Going by the configuration we received with ASUS PCDIY, i9 12900K for an RTX 3080, the site offers an 850W power supply provided you do not use overclocking (1000W). Be careful though, the output voltage alone does not govern the price of your power supply. All of them differ according to a few criteria which we will discuss later.

Performance index

More technical data which will have its small effect for users/players who wish to obtain the best performance possible. By efficiency, we are talking about the coefficient between the power supply received (230V) and the transformation of this energy into direct current. To put it simply, a 92% PSU, or 80+ Platinum in our case, only 92% of the power will be converted while the rest will be turned into heat. As you will have understood, a higher coefficient means less loss and above all less heating.

80plus-2

Modularity

This is a point that is becoming popular with the possibility of reducing the number of cables by removing those that are not useful to you. In addition, the power supply is easier to mount, as it is bare, and the wiring is easier.

Dimensions

If this information seems trivial, it is important to take an interest in it to know if the PSU fits your tower or not. It seems obvious, but many enclosures now have atypical formats that require a certain amount of space for the passage of the power supply.

Display

Finally, as we had the opportunity to see with the ROG Thor 850W Platinum, it is possible, on high-end devices, to find an LED screen giving the consumption of your configuration in real time. For once, this is an interesting point for those who are not necessarily looking for the best value for money on this type of device, but still remain a gadget for so-called classic use.

Overview ROG Thor 850W Platinum

As part of the ASUS PCDIY operation, our configuration was equipped with a ROG Thor 850W Platinum. We have, as a bonus, the advantage of taking advantage of a case that has an opening on the part containing the power supply. Interesting point, especially when you realize that the power supply ROG Thor 850W Platinum is equipped with a screen on the right side allowing to know the energy consumption of the PC live. Real monster offered by the manufacturer, here is the information to remember.

With a price, overall, less than 250 €, the ROG Thor 850W Platinum power supply is a tenor of its kind, able to compete with many competitors on its very competitive price-quality ratio. Here we find a power supply capable of meeting the needs of a fairly substantial configuration and which can be easily mounted in SLI graphics card (two CGs at the same time) RTX 3080 without batting an eyelid. Its 80+ Platinum certification highlights very high-end energy efficiency with almost zero loss. Finally, we take advantage of this paragraph to recall the configuration of the mounted tower, by adding the consumption data taken in real time.

  • Processor : 12th Gen Intel Core i9-12900K
  • Graphic card : ASUS NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080
  • Internal memory : Samsung SSD 980 1TB (SSD)
  • RAM: DOMINATOR PLATINUM RGB First Edition 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR5 DRAM 5200MHz C36
  • Motherboard : ROG MAXIMUS Z690 HERO (LGA1700)
  • Food : ASUS ROG Strix 850W Platinum 80+
  • AIO water cooling: ROG Ryujin II 360
  • Case: ASUS ROG Strix Helios RGB ATX/EATX Gaming PC Case

For the rest, here are some additional indications:

We can therefore see that the power supply perfectly withstands the shock of such a large configuration to which it will be possible to integrate new products, an SLI system or quite simply take advantage of the native overclocking of all the components. Something to delight experienced users, for a competitive price.
