Rollerdrome: a shooting game that rolls with shyness (Gamekult)

After the good Olli Olli World released at the beginning of the year, the British studio Roll7 is back with a much more arcade and dynamic sliding game, which includes a shooter. rollerdrome offers an experience that is certainly unique, but unfinished.

Speed, fluidity, lethality. Such is the trinity that rollerdrome. Equipped with her skates, Kara Hassan must fight every day to survive in this futuristic world of 2030. In an arena pouring out waves of enemies, she must roll and execute her opponents with panache. But things get worse when the Matterhorn military lobby summons her to the toughest grand slam ever. The fights then take place in four phases (hens, quarters, semi-finals and final), each of them offering two to four different arenas. In addition to their peculiarities of gameplay and of level design, they offer ten challenges to complete in addition to the extermination of enemies. Depending on the objects collected and the figures imposed during a kill, these missions allow you to progress in the game while adding an extra dose of difficulty. A clever cocktail that gives the impression of seeing Dead Pool on rollerblades.

With its soundtrack of synth waveproduced by electro artist Electric Dragon and its graphics in cel shading (animation technique with non-photorealistic shadows giving a cartoon aspect, editor’s note) with saturated colors, rollerdrome is clearly a tribute to the futurism of the 70s and 80s. And if floating with grace and barbarism in this universe confers an exhilarating sensation, according to Gamekult, the game struggles to go to the end of things. In terms of narration already, if a frame weaves a common thread, nothing goes much further than a simple sequence of arena fights. Certain bosses make their appearance, with their peculiarities of gameplay, without however being enough to bring a sufficiently powerful breath. But rollerdrome above all exposes the shyness, even the lack of ambition, of his studio.

The TPS gives the impression that Roll7 does not believe in its project, or at least that it emits a certain reserve. Whether rollerdrome ends in about six hours, just like Olli Olli World, the latter has at least the merit of offering depth and replayability that can double its lifespan. But the latest from the British studio offers nothing more than a linear single-player game without any extras. Apart from the four weapons that are unlocked over the course of the game, no additional content tickles the player. And once the adventure is over, all you have to do is close the game since rollerdrome does not offer alternate game modes, sandboxes, or even multiplayer. The union minimum. And it’s a shame because after its presentation at the last Summer Game Fest, the game raised the hype. But the sad reality caused the soufflé to fall. We hope all the same that Roll7 will not abandon its project in a corner, and will feed it into a potential future DLC.
