Like many high-end brands, Rolls-Royce is preparing to switch to all-electric over the next few years. A passage almost obligatory for all manufacturers, from the most generalists to the most luxurious, while the European Union plans to ban the sale of internal combustion vehicles by 2035. Suffice to say that the deadline is approaching, while the brands are all accelerating the pace to a greater or lesser extent.

This is particularly the case of the English brand, which plans for its entire catalog to become 100% electric by 2030. A date which coincides with many other high-end manufacturers, many of them preparing to launch their first zero-emission model. On the side of the British firm, it will be the Spectre, a large coupe which should replace the Phantom, launched in 2017.

In development

For now, information about this newcomer to the range is still scarce. Nevertheless, our English colleagues from Autocar had the chance to discover the development process of this Spectre, and to discuss with the engineers. The opportunity to learn a few things about the one that will be equipped with a 700 kilo battery pack. For now, this is the only technical information confirmed by the brand.

This battery will be installed flat under the floor, which should guarantee excellent handling thanks to the lowered center of gravity. According to our colleagues, Rolls-Royce points out that the production version will be equipped with 23-inch wheels. It is also known that the two electric motors will be distributed between the axles. Coach announces that the electric coupe will be equipped with rear-wheel steering, as well as the anti-roll system already present on other models in the range.

Silence and technology

If we still know very little about this new Rolls-Royce Spectre, which should arrive in the range by next year, a spokesperson for the brand underlines that it will silence its main asset, while an aerodynamic pack will be offered to reduce air and tire noise as much as possible. Specific rubbers could be tailor-made for the electric coupe.

More technological than ever, it has more than 7 kilometers of cable, compared to 2 kilometers on average for current models. In total, the Specter will have 25 times more algorithms than other cars in the range, and more than 141,200 transmitter-receiver connections for all of its 1,000 functions. There is no doubt that it will be equipped with many more advanced aids than ever as well as autonomous driving.
