ROME, Dec 6 (Reuters) – Italian authorities have officially informed their Chinese counterparts that they are withdrawing from the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a massive infrastructure project orchestrated by Beijing, it said. – we learned on Tuesday from government sources.
Giorgia Meloni, the President of the Italian Council, has been repeating for several months that she wishes to leave this system which takes its name from the old network of trade routes which linked China to the West.
Then led by Giuseppe Conte, in 2019 Italy became the first, and to date the only, G7 country to join the BRI. This agreement was due to end in March 2024 but it would have been automatically renewed if the Italian government had not come forward.
