A modern reboot

Along with Charmed, Smallville and Dark Angel, Roswell is one of those cult series that left its mark on a generation that found themselves in front of their television screens on Saturday nights to watch the Saturday Trilogy.

Almost 20 years after its launch, the CW decided to offer the fiction worn by Shiri Appleby, Jason Behr and Katherine Heigl a reboot soberly titled Roswell, New Mexico. In this new version produced by Julie Plec, to whom we owe Vampire Diaries and The Originals, exit high school and teenage love affairs.

Now an adult, Liz returns to her hometown after a 10-year absence, where she will discover that her childhood sweetheart, Max, now a police officer, is in reality an alien. As they reconnect, they will have to face a new threat from elsewhere.

Much more current in its words, Roswell, New Mexico openly addresses societal issues that preoccupy and divide America today. Racism, injustice and discrimination are central themes of this reboot, which has chosen to make the character of Liz a child of undocumented Mexican immigrants. A situation that is proving more and more dangerous as racism gains ground in the small town of Roswell.

Jeanine Mason and Nathan Parsons.

To camp the central character, the CW called on Jeanine Mason, revealed in season 14 of Grey’s Anatomy. In front of her, we can find Nathan Parsons, an actor seen in True Blood and The Originals, who slips here in the skin of Max.

Isobel and Michael are embodied respectively by Lily Cowles and Michael Vlamis who get their first major roles with Roswell, New Mexico. The latter also forms a secret couple with Alex, played by Tyler Blackburn, a regular in series for teens since he was in the casting of Pretty Little Liars. Heather Hemmens (Hellcats) and Michael Trevino (The Vampire Diaries) round out the cast.
